Get Inspired: 4 Biggest Career Lessons of All Time

4 biggest career lessons of 2017

As employees, we will continue to make mistakes. But the journey towards bettering yourself is a constant process that doesn’t happen overnight. While it’s important to take notice of your shortfalls, you shouldn’t be taking these mistakes to heart, and worse still, let it affect your outlook for the new working year ahead.

So, here are some of the biggest career lessons that are relevant today and will be in the future.

  1. There’s no need to worry at work
We all slip into a state of worry when something at work doesn’t go our way. What’s worse is that with a rational mind, it’s easy to know that staying worried won’t move things along. Yet most of us still can’t help but start playing out every worst possible scenario in our head. It’s important to remember that at the end of the day, if the situation remains out of your control, worrying will worsen only your state of mind and hinder you from viewing the situation objectively, eating into your problem-solving abilities.

Situations like this will happen over and over again throughout your career, and it’s perfectly normal to feel affected. For example, in times of uncertainty at work, it’s easy to worry and feel scared. But it’s best to keep your head down and ask yourself if there’s really no way around it. If the answer is a resounding no, come up with a solution and work on it.

  2. To grow, you’ll first need to adapt
The world is constantly changing. To survive, you need to adapt, accept and grow with the changes. We know how all that chatter about automation can seem daunting and throwing you off your A-game at work.Again, it’s normal to be worried, but you shouldn’t let the fear hinder you from being your amazing self. Don’t view the need to adapt as a threat, but rather as a challenge to improve yourself. When expected to do something outside of your expertise, instead of simply brushing it off or passing it on, perhaps it’s time to look inward and decide if you can diversify your role and take this on too.

  3. Never stop learning
Do not be fooled, learning isn’t just about trying to become better at your job every day, but also to become a better version of yourself holistically. One way is to learn from other people. As there are so many different characters with various talents at your workplace, it’s the ideal place to learn.Everyone has an interesting story to tell and every bit of that conversation adds a new dimension to your character when you decide to pick something up. Remember that the moment you stop wanting to learn is the moment you begin to stagnate.

  4. Don’t stop looking after yourself
Lastly, none of the best moments in your life takes place with you glued to your desk monitors. Your well-being matters, regardless of where you are and what time of the year it is.

Be sure you’re not neglecting all your needs, whether it’s on a personal, emotional and physical level. Make time for the people that matter, take up a hobby or class to continue stimulating your brain and creativity, or join the community gym to stay active and healthy!
