 How to stay healthy and fit during Diwali

Festive periods are filled with joy, fun and delicious food — and Diwali is no different. Unless you’re employing a great deal of restraint, it’s hard not to overindulge on all the flavourful treats on display in the office.

Join the celebrations and get a taste of the holiday — and if you feel sorry for yourself after a few too many pieces of ‘mithai’, you can always get back on track once the holiday is over. Even if you can’t hit the gym regularly, there are ways to stay healthy at work after a massive binge:

Don’t indulge in leftovers

Once back from the Diwali break, it’s time to get serious with a new routine and regimen. The first step to getting back on track is to stop indulging and while it can be tempting to see all the leftovers, remember you’ve had your fair share. Be sure to decline when anyone offers. And if you’re the sort of person prone to cheating on your diet, avoid the office pantry like the plague.

Flush the sweets away

We all wish it was that easy – flushing away the guilt and calories with a glass of water. After the Diwali eating spree, it’s important to detox our bodies – at least a little bit. You might not have the time to commit to a full detox, but increasing your water intake can do wonders. It flushes out toxins, increases your energy levels and promotes weight loss. So keep refilling your water glass throughout the day.

Take a break

Getting up from your desk and taking a break doesn’t mean you should disappear into the office pantry and secretly snack.

Walking away from your desk and going for a short walk is not only good for your body but can actually increases productivity, refresh your attention span and improves concentration. Start your post-Diwali routine right and take at least two short breaks during your workday. A brisk walk after lunch not only aid digestions, but also helps to snap out of that lethargic feeling.

Deskercise your way through the day

While there’s no need to roll out your yoga mat behind your office chair, paying attention to your body will go a long way. Sitting all day in an uncomfortable position isn’t just bad for your productivity but can also impact your body negatively.

Work at a standing desk if that’s a possibility. Standing up straight is good for your posture and can help you to lower your blood sugar levels. Working while standing is especially beneficial after lunch, as it helps you to digest your food better.
