It’s already tough trying to stay cool during a job interview, much less trying to dress up and stay sweat free in one, especially in Singapore’s tropical climate.
Regardless of the interview you’re going for, here are strategies that will help you stay cool and confident.
Before the interview
Even though you may be wearing a jacket to the interview, there’s no need to put it on until you arrive at the location of the interview. On your way there, you can hang your jacket in the back seat of your vehicle, or wrap your coat over your arm to avoid wrinkling it.
1. Formal Business Interview Attire
If you are required to wear business attire, invest in a lightweight suit and tie. For women, a pencil skirt, a solid dress or a lightweight jacket with a dress will be the best choice. A great rule of thumb when dressing for a summer interview is to keep your shapes and silhouettes classic and simple.
A jacket, with slacks or a skirt looks professional, and will keep you comfortable. Shells come in many shapes and colors, allowing you to change your look for different interviews without having to invest in numerous suits. A closed pair of toe pumps is a necessary part of the package.
Men should opt for formal suits in classic blues or greys. Shirts that come in lighter weight cotton are most suited for the mid-summer heat. Keep a change of tie for a different look, should you have multiple interviews scheduled on the same day.
2. Business Casual Interview Attire
If business casual is required, men can stick with lightweight natural or breathable cotton while women can wear a knee length dress or a skirt with a blouse and closed toe shoes. Try to choose cool colours and warm undertones and prints.
Summer is all about playing with cool and neutral colours. Pick a light colour to avoid trapping heat. Warm pinks, sky blue and shades of warm yellow are most appropriate. Unless the interview demands (black formals), warm undertones are the most preferred shades for a summer interview.
Men should ideally look for lightweight khakis or trousers, absorbent cotton undershirt, and lightweight shirts. Needless to say, dark socks and dress shoes are essential.
Do also remember:
• It is always recommended to carry a bottle of water to stay hydrated during the trip, and keep a handkerchief handy to dab away any perspiration.
• Allow yourself plenty of time to arrive early and comfortably, hurrying only raises your temperature and aggravates your discomfort. If you want to nail an interview, looking professional is only part of the equation; you should feel great too.
• Ladies should avoid skimpy tops or plunging necklines on their dresses and blouses. Strappy sandals and white shoes are typically frowned upon and should not be worn.
• Avoid fabric that tends to wrinkle rapidly. This may bring about your outfit looking ineffectively set up together or careless.
• Fix your hair, check your fingernails for dirt; and make sure there’s nothing caught in your teeth (smile).
