Job Overview:
The Course Writer is responsible for designing, writing, and developing high-quality educational content for online and in-person courses. This role involves collaborating with subject matter experts (SMEs) and instructional designers to create engaging, accurate, and structured learning materials that meet educational standards and learner needs. The Course Writer's primary goal is to translate complex information into clear, concise, and engaging content that enhances learning experiences.
Key Responsibilities:
- Content Development & WritingWrite and develop instructional materials, including course outlines, lesson plans, modules, assessments, quizzes, and other supporting documents.
Research and gather information from reliable sources to ensure accuracy and relevance of course content.
Ensure all content is aligned with the course objectives, target audience, and learning outcomes.
- Collaboration with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)Work closely with SMEs to accurately convey complex subject matter in a way that's understandable and engaging for learners.
Conduct interviews or meetings with SMEs to clarify and gather insights, examples, and best practices.
Integrate SME feedback into course materials while maintaining a clear and structured instructional approach.
- Instructional Design & StructureDesign course materials following instructional design principles, ensuring content flows logically and is organized effectively for learner engagement and comprehension.
Develop content that incorporates a mix of learning modalities, such as videos, reading materials, interactive activities, and assessments.
Collaborate with instructional designers to enhance content using multimedia elements where appropriate.
- Editing & Quality AssuranceReview and revise content for accuracy, clarity, grammar, spelling, and consistency.
Perform quality checks to ensure content meets organizational standards and is free of errors.
Ensure content is culturally appropriate, unbiased, and inclusive to reach a diverse audience.
- Assessment DevelopmentCreate formative and summative assessments to evaluate learners understanding and retention of course material.
Design varied assessment types, including multiple-choice questions, case studies, assignments, and project-based evaluations.
Ensure assessments align with learning objectives and provide meaningful feedback.
- Content Adaptation for Different Learning PlatformsAdapt content for various formats, including online courses, webinars, instructor-led training, and self-paced modules.
Work with the learning management system (LMS) team to ensure seamless integration of course content.
Optimize content for mobile devices and other digital platforms if applicable.
- Continuous Improvement & UpdatesRegularly update course content to reflect changes in industry trends, new research, or organizational updates.
Analyze learner feedback and performance data to refine and improve course content and delivery.
Stay current with instructional writing best practices and emerging trends in education and e-learning.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Education, Instructional Design, English, Communications, or a related field. A Master's degree or relevant certifications (e.g., e-learning development) is a plus.
- Experience: Minimum 2-3 years of experience in content writing, curriculum development, instructional design, or related fields.
- Writing Skills: Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Instructional Design Knowledge: Understanding of instructional design principles, adult learning theories, and various learning styles.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and content development tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Canva) is desirable.
- Research Skills: Strong research skills to source credible information and examples for course content.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to work effectively with SMEs and team members.
- Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities.
- Creativity and Adaptability: Innovative approach to creating engaging content and ability to adjust writing style based on audience and platform.
Working Conditions:
- Location: Primarily office-based.
- Hours: Full-time, with occasional extended hours to meet deadlines or support specific projects.
