Director - Carnegie China, Singapore
The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a renowned international affairs institution with headquarters in Washington, D.C. and global centers in Asia, Europe and the Middle East, seeks an entrepreneurial, energetic person to lead its East Asia-based research center focused on China's regional and global role. Based in Singapore with China-focused activities in mainland China as well, the center conducts research and analysis, and convenes an array of activities with and in China, to cast a critical eye on the country's strategic and economic trajectory. The center especially highlights Southeast Asian perspectives.
The entrepreneurial director of the center will hire and develop a network of top-notch scholars, work with organizations in China and across East Asia, and initiate collaborative projects with Carnegie's other centers. The director will help to build Carnegie China, which has recently moved office operations from Beijing to Singapore, as a vital source of original foreign policy research based in the East Asian region and for the East Asian region in particular. Through active outreach to a wide range of policy actors in Singapore, China, and major East Asian capitals, including senior policy makers, the director will find innovative ways to generate original work while bringing Carnegie's work from its other centers to East Asian policy audiences.
Position requires seven plus years work experience subsequent to professional degree. Fluency in Chinese is a significant plus. Must be willing to be based in Singapore and travel frequently to China. Preferred candidates will have a strong knowledge of Chinese foreign policy issues and processes, especially issues that implicate Southeast Asia and transcend the U.S.-China strategic competition, an unusual talent for building creative partnerships with diverse persons and organizations, managerial flair, and boundless energy.
