UWCSEA Dover is seeking passionate and experienced Freelance Debate and Model United Nations (MUN) Instructors [IEC] to join our vibrant educational community from September / October 2024
The ideal candidate will be coaching and mentoring students in debate and MUN activities, helping them develop critical thinking, public speaking, and leadership skills. This role involves preparing students for competitions, guiding them through the intricacies of argumentation and diplomacy, and fostering a supportive environment that encourages intellectual growth.
Main Responsibilities
Teach students the fundamentals of debate, including research, argumentation, rebuttal, and public speaking.- Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that cater to students of varying skill levels.
Coach and prepare students for local, national, and international debate competitions.
- Provide constructive feedback to students to help them improve their debating skills.
Model United Nations (MUN) Instruction:- Guide students through the principles and procedures of Model United Nations, including research, diplomacy, and resolution writing.
Assist students in preparing for MUN conferences, ensuring they understand their roles and responsibilities as delegates.
- Foster a deep understanding of global issues and international relations among students.
Organize and oversee participation in MUN conferences and events.- Mentorship and Leadership:
Mentor students, helping them build confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills.
- Create a positive, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating environment that encourages student participation.
Collaborate with other faculty members to integrate debate and MUN activities into the broader curriculum. Contribute to the development and expansion of the debate and MUN-paid programmes at UWCSEA.
- Stay updated on current trends and best practices in debate and MUN instruction.
Work with the Activities Team to organize and host debate tournaments and MUN conferences.- Provide supervision during local or international conferences when needed
Person Specifications- Certified adjudicator from Julia Gabriel's/ Debate Association (Singapore) or equivalent.
Trained debater and minimum 5 years coaching experience at MOE schools in Singapore is highly desirable
- Bachelors degree holder/ currently pursuing undergraduate/ graduate degree.
A minimum of 5 years supervisory experience/ leadership in similar school and/or Debate club systems/ debate coaching experience at MOE secondary schools / junior college level institutions is highly desirable- Experience coaching and preparing teams for national level tournaments such as SSDC (Division 1) and MIDC.
Extensive adjudication/ debate experience at debate competitions in all mainstream debate formats - i.e. WSDC, BP, Asians.
- Broad and comprehensive understanding of local Singaporean competitive Debate circuit and MUN conferences.
Experience in organising tournaments and conferences is a bonus.- Strong interpersonal, organisational, written and oral communication skills.
Experience with Google Suites is ideal but not essential.
- Able to work cohesively in a team-based environment (with activity coordinators, teachers, parents, students) as well as independently and passionate about working with students from G6 to G
* Ability to understand and anticipate MUN/Debate customers (students/ parents) needs, being sensitive to their situations, opinions and culture, and take action to provide high quality training and service opportunities which exceed their expectations.
