Operating and driving a lorry to transport goods and materials over specified routes to local or distant points according to a time schedule
Inspecting vehicles for mechanical items and safety issues and perform preventative maintenance
Complying with lorry driving rules and regulations (size, weight, route designations, parking and break periods) as well as with company policies and procedures
Planning routes and meeting delivery schedules
Loading and unloading cargo from the lorry, often with the help of a forklift or other machinery
Collecting and verifying delivery instructions, including signatures from customers

Maintaining a logbook of their driving activities to ensure compliance with federal regulations governing the rest and work periods for operators
