About the role
The Market Risk Manager will oversee the identification, assessment, and management of market risks related to Ampol's fuels businesses. This role takes a proactive stance to identify risks through engaging the relevant external and internal stakeholders, appropriately modelling and monitoring risk, effective communication internally to senior stakeholders developing risk management strategies, ensuring the company's financial and operational performance is protected from market fluctuations such as price changes, supply/demand imbalances, geopolitical risks, and regulatory changes. In addition this role will support delivery of Ampol's strategy by providing risk management skills to enhance the Group's trading and risk management activities in accordance with risk appetite, limits and policy settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Risk Identification & Analysis: Identify market risks including price volatility, supply chain disruptions, and regulatory changes in global oil markets.
- Risk Modelling & Analysis: Conduct quantitative analysis and risk modelling of market risk to assess potential impacts on the business. Lead development of new risk oversight tools/reports/projects/policy development. Understand the advantages and disadvantages of different risk measures (e.g. Value-at-Risk, Cashflow-at-Risk, stress testing)
- Communicating Risk: Effective in communicating risk to senior stakeholders through making risks transparent (relevant risk analysis, responsive stress testing, relevant MTM methodology, spotting emerging themes and trends, picking the right items to raise and discuss)
- Risk Control & Reporting: Ensure risk management practices align with company policies and industry best practices. Devise and institute controls over the independent price assessment process.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the business to understand trading strategies and exposures, providing risk insights to manage positions and mitigate potential risk. Active engagement with the Middle Office team to facilitate risk management.This may include topics such as reviewing trading strategies, positions, VaR utilisation and performance.
- BAU: Support due diligence, review and implementation of new instruments and/or trading activities. Support implementation / enhancement of Ampol's financial risk management framework. Provide risk management advice and analysis as required to support business unit decisions.
Qualifications & experience
- Tertiary qualification in a quantitative discipline such as Actuarial, Finance, Engineering or Mathematics.
- Post-tertiary qualifications such as Master of Applied Finance, MBA, CFA, FRM are highly regarded
- Minimum 5-year experience in risk management within the oil and gas industry or commodity trading environment.
- Proven experience in the quantitative modelling of CFaR and VaR.
- Experience with commodity trading systems and market risk platforms
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong understanding of the global oil market, including market drivers, pricing mechanisms, and supply/demand dynamics
- Strong knowledge of derivatives (including options), trading and hedging techniques, and financial markets.
- Excellent analytical skills, with proficiency in quantitative analysis, risk modelling, and statistical software (e.g. Excel, VBA, SQL, Python).
- Strong skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI et al)
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex information to stakeholders clearly and effectively.
