JOB SUMMARY
Competent to provide administrative, technical management and support to the operation of the laboratory bioinformatics team. The person shall provide assistance to laboratory personnel for the daily laboratory analysis of genome sequences of various pathogen and building of relevant databases. The person works together with scientific officers and medical technologist to ensure testing and analysis activities are completed on time and perform troubleshooting when required.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
SPECIFIC
Administration and Implementation
Assist Head, Lab Ops and scientific officers to provide timely and satisfactory technical and application support to laboratory users
Performs extraction and analysis from the next generation sequencing databank.
Responds and take action to address hardware/software and application issues that arises. Perform investigation to identify the root causes and follow up with necessary mitigating action to resolve the issues and implement preventive measures.
Assists Head, Lab Ops and scientific officers to coordinate both software and hardware upgrades, system updates etc.
Ensures compliance with policies and procedures and regulatory standards
Provides after officer hours support to laboratory users, when necessary
Quality Assurance
Performs periodic and daily maintenance of the laboratory databases to ensure the system functions properly and prompt follow-up with necessary action to address any system malfunction to minimize downtime.
Reviews and perform housekeeping of relevant documentations and ensures records and documents are traceable.
Assists Head, Lab Ops and scientific officers to maintain records and documents.
Others
Assists Head, Lab Ops and scientific officers to manage information, pathogen sequences and databases.
Assists Head, Lab Ops and scientific officers to review and improve laboratory workflow and processes for bioinformatics analysis within and across sectios.
Participates in public health functions, surveillance programs and outbreak investigations that require NPHL Bioinformatics involvement.
Performs other duties as assigned.
GENERAL
Follows general hospital and laboratory policies concerning dress codes, professional conduct, attendance, punctuality, safety, documentation, performance criteria and other directives as issued.
Works regular hours: however coverage after office hours and on weekends and public holidays to meet the needs of the laboratory and institution are expected.
Complies with all safety and infection control polices and standard procedures of NPHL, NCID, TTSH and MOH BioSafety Branch as exposure to highly infectious and hazardous specimens, materials, and chemicals, which are found in a typical BSL2 laboratory environment, is expected.
Assists supervisor in giving instruction and supervision of attachment students and junior staffs and performs orientation for new staff.
Helps to promote a working environment of collegiality and effective teamwork.
Possess good organization, coordination, communication and computer skills, and aptitude to train and supervise the works of others.
For designated duties of internal auditor, safety officers/deputy safety officer, fire warden/assistant fire warden, department point of contact and in-charges, the person must comply with the relevant policies and guidelines. Keeps inventory records of all fixed assets and assists BME and Facility Engineering to ensure equipment preventive maintenance are performed.
Assists supervisor to maintain and updates the laboratory quality manuals.
To perform any other designated administrative and IT related duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
Preferred: Bachelors degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Computer Science, Life Sciences, or a related field.
Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to details, interests in infectious diseases and public health, and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
EXPERIENCE
Medical Technologist: Fresh graduate or 2-3 years of working experience as medical technologist in molecular diagnostic laboratory. Proficiency in one of the programming languages, such as Python, R, or Perl. Experience with SQL, database construction and management, or open-source Laboratory Information Management System is highly desirable. Prior experience in analysing next-generation sequencing data in a research or clinical setting, especially in infectious diseases, is a plus. On-the-job training will be provided.
Senior Medical Technologist: 3-6 years of working experience as medical technologist in molecular diagnostic laboratory. Proficiency in one of the programming languages, such as Python, R, or Perl.
