The successful candidate will manage an R&D team of cell culture biologists and technicians. This role extends beyond the application of cell culture expertise and also encompasses essential administrative and supervisory responsibilities, ensuring the seamless functioning and growth of the cell culture team. The team focuses on developing new cell culture ingredients for the Health Care Business Line, as well as supporting customers in the implementation of our ingredients into their cell culture and bioprocesses. The successful candidate is expected to mentor colleagues, coordinate challenging R&D projects, as well as to work in a global, interdisciplinary team to develop and execute the R&D strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Motivate and manage a local R&D team to accomplish the business vision. This includes project portfolio management, resource management, line management, mentorship of colleagues, ESHQ responsibilities and tracking of deliverables.

Execute and provide input for the R&D strategy (identification of gaps in achieving the business objectives, ideation, proposal of projects to solve unmet needs and execution of R&D plans).

Communicate and coordinate with customers, partners and senior management.

Foster a motivational environment to help staff develop to their full potential and meet their responsibilities.

Coordinate R&D, HR and organizational activities with other Life Science team leaders.

Ideate and manage innovation and customer projects in the area of CHO cell culture and bioproduction of therapeutic proteins.

Collaborate with other teams and functions (such as cross functional global R&D, production teams, business line teams, technical marketing, sales & BD etc.) to launch new products, communicate relevant scientific findings, and resolve customer inquiries.

Ensure R&D contribution to global scientific publications and application data generation for scientific marketing of Evonik cell culture ingredients.

Expand scientific and business network (both locally and globally) to support Evonik business and interests.

REQUIREMENTS

Experience in an R&D leadership role for at least 5 years. Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams in an industry is an advantage.

Doctorate (PhD or DEng) or Masters degree in Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Biology, or similar Life Science fields with at least 8 years of working experience.

Expertise in the area of mammalian cell culture, particularly CHO cell culture for industrial production of therapeutic proteins.

Strong technical and analytical skills.

Ability to communicate effectively across a broad range of technical and business disciplines.

Ability to work with multiple tasks, set priorities and make decisions.

Good presentation, oral and written communication skills.

Experience in a laboratory environment and familiarity with safety practices, standard operating procedures and experimental protocols.

Track record of planning, managing and executing projects and resources to deliver on business goals.

Strong mentorship capabilities and enthusiasm in generating new ideas to advance business goals.
