The National University of Singapore invites applications for a Research Assistant/Research Associate in the Human Potential Translational Research Programme (HPTRP), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The HPTRP brings together researchers from a wide range of disciplines with an interest to maximise human potential. In HPTRP, focusing only on human studies, we adopt a holistic perspective that considers human potential as an integrative measure of health, productivity, performance, human capital and overall well-being over the lifespan, in our environment. Appointments will be made on a one-year contract, with the possibility of a one-year extension.

Purpose of the post

The Research Assistant/Research Associate (RA) will be involved in an ethnographic and historical study that investigates the urban heat experiences and practices of Singapore households. The RA will be responsible to, and work closely with, the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator(s) to ensure the successful and timely completion of the project. The RA's principal role will be to recruit participants, participate in multi-method physiological-ethnographic fieldwork investigations (physio-ethnography), conduct ethnographic and oral history interviews, data entry and analysis, interview transcription and drafting of publications and reports.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Assistant/Research Associate will assist in physio-ethnographic research and analysis (i.e. conduct interviews, participant-observation, data collection and organisation etc.), liaise with relevant personnel and will be accountable to the Principal Investigator.

The Research Assistant will:

  1. Support the conduct of physio-ethnographic research
  2. Provide administrative support to the project, such as in the recruitment of participants and data collection
  3. Maintain the highest standard of professional conduct and record-keeping in accordance with policies and procedures
  4. Maintain regular communication with other members of the research team
  5. Perform literature review, data analysis and drafting of reports and publications
  6. Work at different study sites, depending on the needs and
  7. Work beyond routine work hours due to the nature of research.

Qualifications

The applicant should:

  1. Have a good Bachelor's or Master's degree, preferably in anthropology, history, geography or a closely-related social science or humanities discipline
  2. Preferably an interest in medical anthropology, history of medicine, health humanities, or science and technology studies (STS) and/or a second major or degree in the life sciences (e.g. physiology, biological anthropology, environmental biology, exercise science, public health, nutrition, traditional Chinese medicine etc)
  3. Have undertaken rigorous social scientific or humanities research, at least at the honours level
  4. Preferably have an interest and/or experience in conducting field research with human participants.
  5. Be able to work independently and in a team
  6. Have an investigative nature and be detail-oriented have knowledge of computer applications, e.g. SPSS, MS Office.

Remuneration will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience.
