We are currently looking for a Scientist 2 to join our Protein Engineering team. Resourceful individuals with wide-ranging scientific interests, who enjoy a fast-paced, hard-charging, but fun and collaborative interdisciplinary research environment will be a good fit. As part of the Protein Engineering team, you will be developing future sequencing and library preparation biochemistries with a focus on enzymatic processes.

Position Summary
As a Scientist 2 within Illumina's Research and Development team, you will work as part of a multi-disciplinary research team to help create new sequencing methods. Scientist 2 employees are expected to be significantly autonomous and technically proficient. They should be able to execute assigned tasks with minimal oversight as well as troubleshoot procedural problems that may arise. Primary responsibilities include research and development of new protein mutants. This would include cloning, expression and purification of recombinant proteins, as well as screening for positive mutants through biochemical assays.

Strong applicants with lesser experience will be considered for a position commensurate with the experience.

Responsibilities:

• Designs and performs experiments of varying complexity and across a broad array of techniques, foresees issues and works to overcome obstacles to completing tasks or assignments, conceives of new ways to analyze the data and present it
• Plans, conducts, summarizes, reports consistent conclusions, and generates recommendations for follow up experiments and may suggest alternate strategies
• Takes responsibility for training others, raising the consistency and quality of data collection of the team, establishes criteria and / or work procedures to achieve a high level of quality and productivity
• Keeps detailed lab notebooks, prepare reports, updates, and summaries for managers and teams as directed

Requirements:

• Able to readily apply experiential knowledge to develop new or adapt existing technology and processes
• Highly proficient, productive, and effective in the lab
• Ability to design complex experiments containing appropriate controls to anticipate potential problems able to troubleshoot issues
• Strong ability to collaborate across multiple disciplines with team members and internal customers
• Communicates effectively in various environments with different stakeholders tailoring communications and presentations as necessary

Preferred Skills and Experience:

• Experienced in biochemical assays such as fluorescence-based assays and protein characterization techniques such as protein purification, SDS-PAGE, and enzyme characterizations
• Experienced in molecular biology techniques
• Medium- and high-throughput library screening experience involving robotic automation and/or flow cytometry
• Prior experience with NGS is preferred
• Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt according to the requirement of new projects
• Good communication skills
• A can do attitude, and game to take on new challenges
• Industrial experience is highly desirable

Education:

• Typically requires a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 2 years of related experience or an advanced degree without experience or equivalent work experience.
