Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU) offered the first Materials Engineering degree in Singapore under the division of Materials Engineering in 1991. With the increasing demand for materials engineers, the division was subsequently elevated to a full-fledged engineering school in 2000. The School of Materials Engineering (MSE) now stands as one of the world's largest Materials Engineering departments.
This role is to support the daily operations and all aspects of safety in MSE to align to the overall safety directive of NTU and MSE, through conducting housekeeping and safety inspections for all laboratories and graduate offices so that research can be performed in a safe, conducive and excellent environment, in addition to conducting the practical sessions for undergraduate/postgraduate laboratory modules.
Roles And Responsibilities
Support the safety operations in MSE
- Assist the Manager in developing and implementing Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS), SOPs, and safety guidelines for the school.
- Review and approve lab access and update safety training results.
- Address safety queries, conduct safety inspections, and provide safety training.
- Organize and arrange safety drills, safety meetings, and promote safety culture.
- Participate in incident investigations and follow up on the implementation of corrective actions.
- Participate as a member of First Aid and Spill Response Team under the Emergency Response Team.
Handle laboratory equipment
- Provide training and consultation to staff and students on equipment use and maintenance.
- Schedule routine maintenance, coordinate repairs, and generate equipment reports.
- Source and procure equipment consumables.
Support for Undergraduate Student Teaching
- Provide equipment training and support for undergraduate experiments.
- Inspect and set up equipment and guide students during experiments.
Requirements
- A recognized degree in an engineering discipline.
- Knowledge in the field of mechanical, electrical, biological and chemical safety.
- Minimum 1-2 years of experience managing laboratory safety and equipment.
- Meticulous and attention to detail with good interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Efficient problem solver.
- Able to work independently and under pressure.
- Good initiative, service-oriented mindset, teamwork, and attitude to work.
- Good written and verbal communication.
- Working knowledge and expertise with a variety of software, hardware, and applications would be of added advantage.
