Job Title: Solar Project Engineer

Reports to: Project Manager or Engineering Manager
Job Summary
The Solar Project Engineer will oversee the engineering, design, and technical aspects of solar projects from initiation to completion. This role requires close collaboration with project managers, design teams, and installation crews to ensure that each project is executed to the highest standards, safely, efficiently, and within budget. The Solar Project Engineer will also ensure compliance with all regulatory and industry standards, troubleshoot technical issues, and support continuous improvement in project execution.
Key Responsibilities
1. Project Design and Engineering
- Develop and review detailed designs for solar PV systems, including single-line diagrams, layouts, and schematics.
- Conduct feasibility studies and site assessments, including shading analysis, solar irradiance, and other site-specific conditions.
- Work with design software (e.g., AutoCAD, PVsyst, Helioscope, or similar) to model and optimize system performance.
- Select appropriate system components (e.g., inverters, solar panels, mounting structures) based on project requirements, budget, and site conditions.
- Collaborate with structural and electrical engineers to ensure system designs meet safety and regulatory standards.
2. Project Planning and Coordination
- Develop project timelines, resource plans, and engineering deliverables in collaboration with the project management team.
- Coordinate with procurement to source materials and ensure timely delivery of components.
- Prepare technical documents, including bill of materials, wiring diagrams, and specifications.
- Participate in pre-construction meetings to ensure alignment on project requirements and schedules.
3. Quality Control and Compliance
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant codes, standards, and regulatory requirements (e.g., NEC, IEC, local building codes).
- Conduct technical reviews and inspections of completed installations to ensure adherence to design specifications and quality standards.
- Implement quality control measures and perform periodic checks during installation.
- Review and approve submittals, test plans, and commissioning procedures.
4. Technical Support and Troubleshooting
- Provide technical support to the construction and installation teams, addressing issues as they arise on-site.
- Identify and resolve engineering issues that may affect project timelines, costs, or quality.
- Monitor system performance and work with O&M teams to troubleshoot and rectify issues post-installation.
5. Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of engineering designs, specifications, and project changes.
- Prepare and present project status reports, highlighting technical progress, issues, and risks.
- Ensure that all documentation, including as-built drawings and commissioning reports, is completed accurately and submitted in a timely manner.
6. Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Compliance
- Ensure all engineering practices comply with company HSE policies and local regulatory requirements.
- Participate in safety meetings, conduct risk assessments, and promote a safety-first culture on-site.
- Identify potential safety risks in the design phase and work with teams to mitigate these risks in implementation.
7. Stakeholder Communication
- Liaise with clients, contractors, and subcontractors to ensure alignment on project requirements and deliverables.
- Communicate technical updates, project progress, and any changes to key stakeholders.
- Attend site visits and client meetings to address technical queries and provide project updates.
Required Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in solar project engineering, renewable energy, or a related industry.
- Proven experience with solar PV system design and project management.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in design and simulation software (e.g., AutoCAD, PVsyst, Helioscope).
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems, solar PV technology, and power distribution.
- Familiarity with industry standards and codes (e.g., NEC, IEC).
- Understanding of site assessment tools and techniques, including shading and irradiance analysis.
Soft Skills
- Excellent problem-solving skills with a detail-oriented approach.
- Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with clients, team members, and stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Additional Requirements
- Willingness to travel to project sites as required.
- Valid driver's license.
- Professional Engineer (PE) certification or PMP certification is a plus.
- Ability to work in outdoor conditions and at heights (if applicable).
