About the Role
This role supports the sale of potash by BHP. You will work closely with the commercial team managing: (i) the sale of potash products; and (ii) the development of sales channels and supply chains required for distribution of potash, in each case with a focus on the global seaborne market, particularly Asia. Developing an in-depth understanding of the potash market and supply chains will be important for your success in the role. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to, or lead, a variety of projects within the wider BHP Legal team
You will be responsible for advising on a wide range of matters and projects, including:
Agreements for the sale of potash in the global seaborne market, particularly Asia;
Agreements related to the supply chain for potash, including the loading, transport, unloading and storage of potash (bonded and unbonded);
Due diligence into regulatory requirements of countries where customers may wish to import BHPs potash, including fertiliser regulation, export / import requirements for potash, etc.; and
Disputes related to the sale or distribution of potash around the world.
Participate in BHPs internal risk assessments and advise on the management of potential future legal and other risks.
Support other parts of BHP Legal in relation to the management of incidents, production issues and disputes, by providing business-specific legal advice.
Participate in and deliver projects and continuous improvement initiatives
Deliver legal training and contribute to the development and maintenance of training and guidance material.
Contribute to regular internal reporting in line with BHPs governance frameworks.
Manage external legal advice and spend as required, including matter budgets and billing.
Travel internationally as required.
About You
Qualifications
A minimum of five years PQE experience in a highly regarded law firm or in-house legal team, and experience in the resources and commodities sector, including:
Advising on legal issues associated with the international sale, storage and transport of commodities (ideally, dry bulk commodities);
Drafting and negotiating commodity sale and purchase agreements, and other complex commercial agreements; and
A basic understanding of key legal and regulatory frameworks relevant to international trade.
Law degree and currently admitted to practice in a major common law jurisdiction.
Required skills and Competencies
Strong technical understanding of the relevant areas of law and the ability to deploy this to support business priorities and objectives in a timely manner, including by providing risk-weighted judgment and advice which considers the commercial context.
Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to synthesize complex information into concise, clear communications for a non-legal audience.
Able to manage multiple projects, meet competing deadlines and prioritize and reprioritize work effectively as new tasks arise or business objectives change.
Confidence to speak up and challenge a proposed course of action where appropriate. Will take responsibility for and lead outcomes in their area of work.
Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills. Enjoys working in a team and can engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders with different backgrounds and objectives.
Curious, motivated, independent problem-solver who thinks strategically, asks questions and drives continuous improvement.
