Summary
We are looking for a highly talented Sr. Staff Engineer to be a part of the Consumables Development Team in the Product Development Engineering department. In this position you will contribute to the definition and development of new consumable products to support Illumina's industry leading genetic applications. This is a leadership role wherein this individual will be required to direct and oversee the work of other engineers, develop budgets and timelines, and provide ongoing communication to senior leadership. This team is responsible for evaluating new technologies, materials, and vendor partners to meet performance, reliability, yield, and cost objectives of product development.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Lead product development teams. Create budgets and timelines. Assist in the allocation of resources across multiple programs.
- Contribute to development cycles of new consumable products, including design, assembly architecture, process definition, process development, equipment specification and prototyping, materials selections and metrology development.
- Define product-level specifications and requirements and translate them to critical parameter management at physical level in the process.
- Implement model systems to reduce cycle of learning time of process development
- Contribute to product level design, characterization, troubleshooting, and failure analysis.
- Work with cross-functional teams to develop and deploy novel materials, assembly processes, and characterization techniques and implement those at a prototype level.
- Define and implement process controls, in-line monitoring, and metrology for QA
- Data analysis of trends in performance tied to fundamental parameters and workflow; provide guidance on continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications
- Experienced leader preferably with management experience.
- Experienced in the design and development of complex integrated devices (Diagnostic, Microfluidic, Microelectronic, MEMS, etc.)
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems related to device assembly, micro-fluidics, chemical interactions, and strength/reliability of materials.
- Experience with design of experiment (DOE) methodologies and statistical methods for data analysis (i.e., JMP, Minitab)
- Experience with fabrication of fluidic devices, laser welding, plastic joining, or PSA lamination methods is a plus
- Experience with the Lyophilization of reagents and the subsequent handling is a plus.
- Experience with reagent Fill & Finish processes is a plus
- Experience with process development, statistical process control, improvement, scale-up and transfer to manufacturing is a plus
- Ability to relate basic material, physical characteristics, and fabrication variations to performance
- Strong interdepartmental communication skills required
- Collaborates, builds relationships and influences team members to work toward common goals
- Excellent written and oral communication and experienced presentation skills
- Self-driven team player with attention to detail and analytical problem-solving skills, that can work well in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary industrial environment

Education & Experience
- BS, MS, or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Bio-Medical Engineering or related technical field with experience in new product development.
- Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 7 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with demonstrated ability in consumables device development
